After migrating from Algeria to Paris and studying acting, Françoise Arnoul, born Françoise Gautsch aka Annette Gautsch began her film career in 1949. Alternating between the Vamp and the Ingénue she took the male population of the European continent by storm… she was surely to become the next great sex symbol! After exposing her left breast in 1952’s Le fruit défendu followed by more nudity in the 1953 film La Rage au Corps, aka A Tempest in the Flesh … her title seemed secure. To put that kind of nudity in perspective, in 1952, one of Swedish director Ingmar Bergman's films, One Summer of Happiness, was censored throughout most of Europe and in North America because a naked teenage boy and girl could see each other nude, even though the audiences could not! Nearly overnight and right out of the blue her sex goddess title was blown away by a fresh young sexy French blond bombshell named Brigitte Bardot. Françoise nevertheless remained busy making European films with all the greats of the 50’s and 60’s… her unusually pretty face and petite frame with disproportionately large breasts won her roles in two films by two legendary French directors: Jean Renoir's French Can-Can (1955) and Jean Cocteau's Orphic Trilogy closer, and her final completed film Le testament d'Orphée (1960). Sadly, she disappeared off our radar screen—and all other screens as well—throughout the 70s and 80s but then she abruptly reappeared in character roles in the 90s with flicks like Post Coitum, and Animal Triste. 2016's Le cancre would sadly prove to be Françoise's final film as she left us in July 2021, mere weeks after her 90th birthday.
