The lovely Jitsuko Yoshimura burned bright in the world of Japanese film in the 1960s before retiring suddenly and without warning in 1970. Since that time, she has ended up making her way back into the world of film and television, appearing in a season three episode of the long-running Japanese television series Jibou in 2005. However, it was her work between 1961 and 1970 that helped make her a legend. She was discovered by legendary director Shohei Imamura (Vengeance is Mine, The Ballad of Narayama), who cast Jitsuko in his satirical comedy film Pigs and Battleships (1961) when she was only 18! Two years later she reunited with the director for his intense character drama The Insect Woman (1963). The following year, Jitsuko landed her first leading role in Kaneto Shindo's Onibaba (1964), playing the daughter-in-law of Nobuko Otowa's character. She and her mother-in-law live a meager existence during Japan's 14th century civil war by murdering lost samurai and selling their possessions. Yoshimura makes her nude debut in this flick, baring her boobs and bush in several scenes that ride the line between haunting and sexy! Yoshimura's film career came to a close with two films in 1970. First she appeared in legendary director Akira Kurosawa's first color film Dodes'ka-den (1970) playing one of the denizens living in a junkyard. Then she appeared in the notorious fantasy flop Cleopatra (1970), which was only recognized for its subversive genius years later when it was turned into a famous manga. Jitsuko may not be acting anymore, but we can't thank her enough for the mammaries!
