Mr. Skin always likes to say a boob is a boob, but he may have to make an exception to that rule after seeing Myriam Cyr in her debut feature film, starring as Claire in Gothic (1986). It’s a quirky drama, fantasy, horror pic starring Gabriel Byrne as Lord Byron, and Julian Sands and Natasha Richardson as the Shelleys, as in Mary Shelley, author of Frankenstein. The characters are high and darkly imaginative, telling tales of horror and sexual fantasies combined together. All this to say, Myriam’s bare nipples turn into eyeballs and creep out Sands and the audience in one fell swoop. Her perky pointers are a little less creepy when Byrne gives them a good suckle, so at least the eyeball thing can be slightly erased from memory. Born in Canada, she trained at the London Academy of Dramatic Arts, and most of her film work and stage production emanate from within the UK. After Gothic, she pulled roles as the Information Officer in Roger Corman’s Frankenstein Unbound (1990) with John Hurt and Bridget Fonda; Julitte in Canada’s Le secret de Jérôme (1994), for which she picked up a Best Actress win at the International Film Festival in Belgium; Ultra Violet in I Shot Andy Warhol (1996) with Lili Taylor; and Anne Sampas in Species II (1998) with Natasha Henstridge. On TV, she played Barbara Dorn in the French mini-series Berlin Lady (1991), and Salome in the UK television movie Oscar Wilde’s Salome (1992). But back to that a boob is a boob thing. Mr. Skin is going to amend that to: A boob is a boob—unless it winks at you.
