Though remembered today mainly for her role as matriarch Shirley Partridge on The Partridge Family (1970), Shirley Jones already had decades of experience on stage and screen before her most prominent role. Hailing from Charleroi, Pennsylvania, Shirley was born with enough innate talent to skyrocket to fame. First, Shirley was a pageant queen, winning the Miss Pittsburgh competition in 1952. Her very first audition was for a Rodgers and Hammerstein casting call. The casting director was so impressed with Shirley's voice that he called Rodgers and Hammerstein themselves to come and listen, and they gave Shirley her first role in a production of South Pacific. The rising star made her way to Broadway and graduated to movie versions of the same musicals. It's no wonder the star was named after singing sensation Shirley Temple!
