Susan Backlinie made quite an impression skinny dipping at the beginning of Steven Spielberg's smash hit Jaws (1975) and offering up quite the tasty morsel for Bruce the shark. Who could resist that meal? That was Susan's debut, which typecast her as a grisly treat for ravenous beasts. (It didn't help that she worked as an animal trainer and even appeared in a Penthouse spread next to a lion!) She was the first victim in the Jaws-on-land rip-off The Grizzly and the Treasure (1976) and followed that with a role in the revolting creature thriller Day of the Animals (1977). Susan was good at opening films but leaving them far too soon, as she tended to be killed off in the first few minutes. Things changed when Spielberg cast her in his comedy 1941 (1979) to parody the role that made her famous. Again, she appears nude whilst dipping in the skinny, but this time, instead of being eaten by a shark or a bear, she encounters a Japanese submarine that nearly impregnates her with its hard periscope. After that skindeavor, Susan appeared in bit parts here and there, including as "Charkie's Water Ballet Performer" in The Great Muppet Caper (1981), before retiring from the screen in 1982. She did score another nude role via archival Jaws footage used in the documentary Terror in the Aisles (1984). Susan left the acting world behind to become a computer consultant, a role she happily maintained until her passing in May, 2024 at age 77!
