Carla's Song (1996) is a foreign romance that takes place in both Scotland and war-torn Nicaragua. Carla is a Nicaraguan exile who left her homeland in search of a better life, but she is depressed to be in Glasgow in 1987. Her life has been very traumatic with her family being dispersed, her boyfriend went missing, and the physical scars that are all over her body. She is feeling suicidal when she meets a friendly bus driver named George Lennox. George and Carla become close and he decides to help her by going to Nicaragua with her and helping her find her family. The war between the US and the Sandinistas is going on when they get there with her country facing constant attacks. There they get help from her American aid worker friend and locate her family and deal with some of the sad past that she has left behind. They then have to choose what they should do next: should they stay together, stay in Nicaragua to confront her past, or go to Scotland for safety? It is a sweet Scottish-Spanish romance, but we are here for Carla.
