Whatever remnant of the Wild West that still resides in California is not found in the strip malls and suburban homes of the San Fernando Valley. That’s what makes Ed Norton dressed up in a ten-gallon hat, blue jeans, boots, and a rope around his shoulders such an anomaly as he cowboys his way through the excellent drama Down in the Valley (2005). Norton’s old-fashioned cowboy finds love with a rebellious youngster in the fetching form of Evan Rachel Wood, and a horrific act of violence changes them both forever. Even cowboys get the blues Down in the Valley.
