Filmmaker Nia DaCosta adapts 19th century playwright Henrik Ibsen’s Hedda Gabbler, setting it in early 20th century England, where Tessa Thompson as the titular character has returned after honeymooning with her new husband George Tesman (Tom Bateman). But don’t let their luxurious house fool you. George is in serious debt and desperate to land a prestigious university professorship in order to pay for their lavish lifetsyle. The couple decides to throw a huge party to help their cause, entertaining George’s boss Professor Greenwood (Finbar Lynch), his young wife Tabitha (Mirren Mack), and a host of other friends. This includes Hedda’s ex-lover Eileen Lövborg (Nina Hoss) who also happens to be up for the same job as George. Throughout the night, Hedda seems intent to get the newly-sober Eileen liquored up and losing all inhibition, but is she doing it to spoil Eileen’s chance at the professorship or because she wants to get Eileen back in bed? Or is it both? At one point a bunch of guests decide to go skinny dipping, so we see an unnamed nude while getting a glance at Tessa in a strapless bra and garters. Meanwhile Nina gets to lock lips with both Tessa and Imogen Poots. Lucky! And speaking of Imogen, she strips down to her period undergarments while dressing with Tessa, though we wish they would do more undressing. And making out. Tessa gets the most action when Tom puts his mouth to work under her party outfit, giving Hedda a little head-a!
