Eighteen-year old Marina (Llúcia Garcia) is headed to college and needs to be added to her father’s death certificate in order to apply for scholarships. Her mom has also passed and she’s been under the care of her maternal grandparents ever since. But she has her mother’s diary from 1983 to 1986, and with it she heads to the coastal Galician city of Vigo to persuade her paternal grandparents (Marina Troncoso and José Ángel Egido) for help. It’s not an easy task, as they would rather not be reminded that their drug-addicted son who died of AIDS had a child out of wedlock. Marina gets introduced to many aunts, uncles, cousins, and more she’s never met before, and soon she learns that the her mother’s stories about the past maybe weren’t completely true. She also finds a connection with her cousin Nuno (Mitch Martín) who plays her father in a dreamy flashback while she becomes her mother, and we see their love story play out before heroin withdrawal separates them. In the part of Mother, Llúcia flaunts her funbags while wearing a barely-there button down, then goes fully nude for the first time as the duo frolick in the sand, surf, and woods. "Romería" means pilgrimage here, and your hand just may take one to the inside of your underwear!
