A man cannot be a hero by increments. He is either wholly noble, or he is to some degree a cad. The brave, well-meaning modern-day knight of Tears of the Sun: Director’s Cut (2003) is a military man who has signed on for the daring rescue of a lady doctor from the seething jungles of civil-war-torn Nigeria. He has calculated the risks to himself and to his men, found the odds daunting, but taken on the mission with little regard for his own safety or comfort. The plan goes off with a hitch or two, but a successful extraction seems imminent. Then the damn woman doctor goes and exercises her prerogative and ruins everything. She refuses to be saved unless seventy refugees are saved along with her. Of such dilemmas, heroes are coined.
