Following On the Beach (1959), The Day the Earth Caught Fire (1961) helped launch the nuclear-war paranoia genre of the ’60s. It’s premise is that the U.S. and Russia coincidentally test atomic bombs at the same time but on opposing planetary poles, which sends the earth into a tailspin toward the sun. Speaking of poles, viewers will find theirs growing as the rising temperatures and ensuing water shortage causes society to partake in communal showers. But before things get that extreme, Janet Munro takes a private bath, which allows the audience to catch a glimpse of her globes. Yes, the earth isn’t the only thing getting hot in this picture.
