A prisoner escapes death and finds love in a traveling theater troupe in the Terry Gilliam fantasy The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009). Tony (Health Ledger) is about to be executed when he literally wriggles free from the hangman's noose. On the run, he is picked up by the eccentric Dr. Parnassus (Christopher Plummer) and his crew, including Parnassus' beautiful daughter Valentina (Lily Cole). Parnassus claims to have once been immortal, but to have made a deal with the Devil, Mr. Nick (Tom Waits), to trade his immortality for youth so he could marry his true love.
