Apparently, Kristen Bell did not have the easiest time kicking this series off. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Bell said that she and the series creator butt heads quite a bit. The series was created by Erin Foster, and the pair had so many arguments during the first season that Bell is surprised that it went ahead and worked.
She said: “I pushed back with constant questioning because I didn’t have the same hooks into the emotional math of my character that I’m used to having. And now I see how much ambiguity there is in real life, and I see what Erin was doing—but there were times where I’d just roll my eyes at her and be like, ‘Ugh, you don’t understand.’”
That certainly sounds difficult to manage! But Erin Foster had to fight against nearly everyone to make the show. Reportedly, her own husband didn't want her to make the show because it was loosely based on their real life.
Production was delayed due to rewrites, and plotlines were completely dropped. The entire team was subjected to a constant barrage of notes and changes that would make anyone's head spin. I can see how all of this would also irritate a professional like Bell, who likely had no idea about all of the behind-the-scenes strife that Erin Foster was dealing with.
Still, the series was made, and it was a huge hit. Now everyone (or, at least, Netflix) knows to trust Erin Foster - especially Kristen Bell, who has her to thank for trusting her with the role.
