Maybe it’s because she’s packing curves and protrusions sufficient to cow any man and bully any broad, but the stage-trained actress Mary McDonnell projects a core confidence that has allowed her to be the only woman in cinema to portray both the first lady in Independence Day (1996), and the president on Battlestar Galactica (2004). Mary grew up in Ithica, New York, before honing her acting skills at the Long Warf Theater in New Haven, Connecticut. She worked there for twenty years in between her prolific acting career in both movies and television. Mary brought strength and force of character to Stands with a Fist, the white woman who chose to live with Native Americans in Dances with Wolves (1990), yet she is soft enough to flirt with flashing flesh as a bedridden actress in Passion Fish (1992) and as a battered-about adulteress in Woman Undone (1996). Range is the dominion of the dominant. Mary teases with a glimpse of her breast and her cute bum in Dances with Wolves, but that could have been a body double.
