It took movie audiences a while to figure it out, but eventually, Olympia Dukakis would become a household name to everyone. The Massachusetts-born daughter of Greek immigrants, the sophisticated beauty had plenty of experience on the stage, a role in daytime drama Search for Tomorrow, and bit parts playing the mother role in multiple films, before being cast as Rose Castorini in the movie Moonstruck (1987). Her fabulous character portrayal won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, as well as a slew of other nominations and awards. A couple years later, she would create the iconic role of Clairee Belcher (“You are too twisted for color TV, Clairee”) in the star-studded movie Steel Magnolias (1989). On television, she originated the Emmy-nominated role of Anna Madrigal in the mini-series Tales of the City in 1993, a character she would reprise in 1998 in More Tales of the City, in 2001 in Further Tales of the City, and in the 2019 series sequel Tales of the City. Continuing to act, Olympia appeared in numerous stage performances, in over 50 television roles, and in over 60 full-length feature films. In the movie Over The Hill (1992), the raspy-voiced stunner played Alma Harris, a woman seeking adventure in Australia; in it, 61-year-old Olympia has her bare breasts painted in a tribal ritual—and the dame looks amazing. Working up until the last minute, Olympia’s final role wrapped up production in 2021 with the film Not to Forget, co-starring Lou Gossett Jr., Tatum O’Neal, and a host of other notables. She passed away in May 2021, and the world is a little less colorful without her.
