Named in 2003 as one of the top 100 Australian Entertainers of the Century, Sigrid Thornton has had a long, impressive career in front of the camera as well as behind it. Born into a family of academics and writers, Sigrid grew up in Brisbane surrounded by art. As a kid, she started acting in commercials before making her big screen debut in the movie The FJ Holden (1977). From there, her career took off with her going on to appear in some of the biggest, most critically acclaimed movies in Australian history such as The Man from Snowy River (1982), and The Lighthorsemen (1987), as well as the hugely popular TV show Seachange. Sigrid, for several years, was so popular down under, the term “The Sigrid Effect” was coined because small towns where Sigrid filmed movies and TV shows suddenly got a lot of exposure and found themselves growing. Sigrid has used her popularity for good, advocating for education and working for children’s charities. She has been appointed by the government to several official bodies that are dedicated to helping develop and sustain the Australian movie industry.
