The title of this Australian adaptation of an unpublished Roger Ward novel has two meanings: it refers to an actual stage set and serves as a nickname for the city of Sydney’s art scene in the 1960s. That’s where Paul Lawrence (Sean Myers aka Sean McEuan) finds himself when he’s plucked from his job selling shirts at a department store by fashionista Marie Rosefield (Brenda Senders), and introduced to artist friend Mark Bronoski (Denis Boonan) who enlists Paul to design a set for British stage director, John L. Fredericks (Michael Charnley). Marie herself has designs on Paul, but Paul - who had been dating a woman named Cara (Amber Rodgers) before she left for London - ends up falling into bed with Tony Brown (Rod Mullinar), an art student and wealthy playboy who’s dating Paul’s cousin Kim (Bronwyn Barber). There’s even more to the sexual web that weaves throughout this film, including a side plot where Kim’s mother Peggy (Hazel Phillips) has an affair with Bronoski. It leads to Hazel playfully running around in her panties, skinny dipping in a pool, and baring her tan-lined tits in bed. Amber also gets in on the nude action, running naked on the beach with Sean before giving us some close-up looks at her sucklers as they lay in the sand. And Ann Aczel shows up to deliver some bonus boobage and butt cheek while in bed with Rod. The film is filled to the brim with nice sets!
