Dressed in Blue (1983)

It’s the early 1980s, and a group of elegantly dressed transvestites who spend their nights working the streets of Madrid while trying not to get arrested have gathered at the Crystal Palace, Parque El Retiro to drink cocktails and tell their stories on camera. It’s a pioneering documentary that would open a door in Spanish cinema for future LGBTQ+ filmmakers like Pedro Almodovar and Paco León. But there’s just as much showing as there is telling - Lorenzo Arana Arellano or Loren, the oldest of the group, opens up her shirt to showcase their surgically enhanced sucksacks. We see René Amor’s rack and rump while getting a hormone injection. Showgirl Francisco Pérez Cobos aka Eva goes fully nude (tucked and untucked) several times, as does José Ruiz Orejon aka Josette. And Juan Muñoz Santiago, known as Tamara, and José Antonio Sánchez aka Mayte also go topless. It’s safe to say we prefer these titillating trans icons un-dressed!
