V/H/S/94 (2021)

The popular found footage horror anthology series gets back to its roots with V/H/S/94 (2021), the first entry in the franchise since V/H/S: Viral (2014). The film's framing device finds a SWAT team tasked with raiding a warehouse thought to contain the headquarters of a vicious cult based around brainwashing folks through the use of snuff films. As the team enters the warehouse, they are treated to a quartet of these shorts used to do the brainwashing. One tale, "Storm Drain," involves an intrepid reporter named Holly (Anna Hopkins) whose noble intentions find her braving a storm drain to meet a figure of urban legend known as "The Ratman" and put a human face to him and his unhoused compatriots. Needless to say, her naivete gets her into a dangerous situation from which there is likely no escape! Another ghostly tale is "The Empty Wake" about a young mortician (Kyal Legend) tasked with hosting her first wake on the night of a vicious storm which keeps all potential visitors away, leaving just her and the body alone in the funeral home. "Terror" finds a bloodthirsty militia in the backwoods of Michigan's upper peninsula running afoul of a band of vampires, while "The Subject" centers on a mad scientist using video game technology to turn his patients into unstoppable killing machines. The film's only nudity is likely achieved through the use of prosthetics as a topless Anna Hopkins finds herself at the mercy of a gruesome experiment! Still, there's never been anything wrong with a little skingoria as nudity and horror have always gone hand in hand!
